Time-based painting ©2009 Raphael DiLuzio. This work is the first new work created since I was hit from behind by a sixteen wheel truck on July eighteenth of 2008. I have been recovering from a post-concussive state for eleven months. During that time I was unable to envision new works or to even do the work itself, but since around late April of 2009, I have begun to be able to imagine again; a process we take for granted. This work, “Seventh Veil,” is an example of the form of Time-Based-Painting I was investigating before the accident. Its structure is almost narrative, approaching “story,” but really is a “broken” cinematic experience.

The work is partially inspired by Tom Robins Book, Skinny Legs and All. A quote form that book has stuck with me since my first reading in 1995:

“Art must ride the retinal railways into the mystery tunnel of the psyche.”

The work is a meditation on mystery, contradiction, seduction and desire. The mythic dance itself may or may not be true as there is great discrepancy over where the origin of the story comes from the bible or Akkadian myths of Ishtar, even the name of the dancer, Salomé and of removing the veils before of King Herod is questionable.

A time-based painting using a narrative I refer to as “broken cinema.”
